One in 12 blacks who grew up in New York City’s Central Harlem may be infected with the AIDS virus and many do not suspect that they are infected, according to a study in the American Journal of Public Health. The study by Columbia University researchers is the first to document high rates of infection among the general population in a minority neighborhood, although it is consistent with estimates for Central Harlem, said Ronald Johnson, New York City’s AIDS policy coordinator.
