Port District Agrees to New Navy Lab Gate

A new security gate for the Navy’s Civil Engineering Laboratory that will reduce traffic near a refrigerated warehouse under construction at the Port of Hueneme is planned after the Oxnard Port District agreed to the plan.

The three-way agreement between the city of Port Hueneme, the port and the Navy calls for the port district to spend an estimated $200,000 to build a new entrance to the 33-acre Navy facility 300 yards east of the existing security gate.

Location of the new gate will reduce the chance of accidents between cars entering the engineering laboratory and trucks hauling citrus to the port’s refrigerated Cool Carrier facility, scheduled to open Jan. 1.

Truck traffic is expected to increase significantly when operations begin at the refrigerated, 137,000-square-foot warehouse, said William Buenger, the port’s deputy executive director.

A provision of the agreement requires the port district to make additional improvements for an estimated $100,000 if the Navy has not abandoned the engineering laboratory site by April, 1997.
