WESTLAKE VILLAGE : Public Smoking Ban Gets Preliminary OK
Following the lead of many of its neighbors, the Westlake Village City Council gave preliminary approval this week to a ban on smoking in most workplaces and indoor public areas.
At its regular meeting Wednesday night, the council unanimously approved a smoking ban that is popular with most residents of the picturesque lakeside town, City Manager Ray Taylor said.
“I think the people in Westlake Village have a good understanding of the effects of secondhand smoke, and they live in a health-conscious environment,” Taylor said. “We really didn’t find much resistance to this ordinance.”
If given final approval by the council Nov. 10, the measure will ban smoking indoors except in private homes and clubs, bars, hotel and motel rooms, tobacco stores, private and designated smoking rooms.
Smoking rooms would be required to have ventilation separate from that of other areas.
The ordinance is more restrictive than similar measures adopted recently in Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Los Angeles. Smoking in those cities is permitted in bar sections of restaurants, even if the two areas share ventilation.
