GTE California Will Lay Off About 280: The state’s second largest telephone company, which has dropped about 1,000 jobs annually over the last 12 years, continues to eliminate employees to reduce costs and increase service automation. The latest round of cuts, due by Dec. 15 and scattered throughout the state, affects primarily cable splicers. GTE California employs 11,895 workers.
