A summary of selected City Hall actions this past week affecting Central Los Angeles.

CITY COUNCIL

* CHAVEZ TRIBUTE: Gave preliminary approval to renaming a stretch of Brooklyn Avenue Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in tribute to the late leader of the farm workers union movement. The council is expected to vote Friday to make the name change final. The actual name change will take place next year on March 31, Chavez’s birthday.

* SINGLE MOTHERS: Approved a $340,693 loan to Gramercy Group Homes, a nonprofit developer, to help with the rehabilitation of a two-story brick structure at 3317-3327 W. Washington Blvd. in the Mid-City area. The home will be used to house low-income, young single mothers and their children. The developer plans to work with social agencies to help tenants prepare for independent living.

* CANCER FUND-RAISER: Approved the closure of several streets near the Coliseum from 6 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 7 for the annual Minnie Riperton Cancer Action Run and Walk. Riperton was a pop singer who died of breast cancer in 1979.

* APPOINTMENT: Approved the appointment of political consultant and community activist Kerman Maddox to the Board of Civil Service Commission. Maddox lives in South-Central.

HOW THEY VOTED

How South-Central and Eastside City Council representatives voted on selected issues. * REWARD: Approved a $25,000 reward payment to a person who provided information that led to the arrest and conviction of a 22-year-old man in the shooting of a Los Angeles firefighter during last year’s riots. The name of the tipster was not revealed. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Rudy Svorinich Jr. and Rita Walters. Absent: Mike Hernandez and Mark Ridley-Thomas.

* HOLIDAY LIGHTING: Approved a proposal for lighting the exterior of City Hall between Thanksgiving and the first week of January. The Southern California International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 11, and the National Electrical Contractors Assn., Los Angeles Chapter, developed the lighting design and will provide all materials, installation and removal free of charge. Passed: 11-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Goldberg, Ridley-Thomas, Svorinich and Walters. Absent: Hernandez and Holden.

* TREE PLANTING: Approved a proposal accepting $20,000 from two outdoor advertising companies to buy and plant trees in the city. Gannett Outdoor Co. Inc. and Patrick Media Group Inc. contributed $10,000 each. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Goldberg, Holden, Svorinich, Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Absent: Alatorre and Hernandez.
