Group to Inform of Food Stamp Availability

The Southern California Interfaith Hunger Coalition has received a $200,000 federal grant to inform eligible Los Angeles County residents of food stamps eligibility.

Outreach efforts will target women and children, the elderly, the homeless, AIDS patients and others who may not realize they are eligible for food stamps.

A 1987 General Accounting Office study found that almost 40% of eligible households did not participate in the program because they did not know they were eligible.

“These funds for outreach are timely when you consider Los Angeles County’s economic difficulties, statewide layoffs and the increasing number of ‘new poor’ who previously never envisioned themselves needing food stamps,” said Elizabeth Riley, the coalition’s executive director.
