Supermarket Employees Approve Contract: Southland members of the United Food and Commercial Workers approved a collective contract offer from five of the seven major grocery chains. The contract--for clerks and meat-cutters at Vons, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Hughes and Stater Bros.--provides modest pay increases for at least 75,000 Southern California workers from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. The union said it is reviewing separate offers from Lucky and Albertson’s, two chains that withdrew from the collective bargaining. The two chains employ about 25,000 UFCW members. The proposals offer lower pay for some employee categories along with provisions that match the collective contract.
