Business Group Seeks End to Japan’s Rice Ban: The Japan Federation of Employers Associations, or Nikkeiren, a leading business lobby, urged the government Tuesday to lift the ban on commercial rice imports and replace it with tariffs. Tokyo’s refusal to replace the ban with tariffs--for reasons of rice self-sufficiency--has been a major obstacle to agreement in the Uruguay Round of multilateral talks under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which participants hope to conclude by the end of this year.
