U.S. Warns That Beijing May Lose Trade Status: China’s most-favored-nation status as a U.S. trading partner cannot be extended beyond June, 1994, unless the country improves its record on human rights, trade practices and nuclear arms proliferation, Secretary of State Warren Christopher told a conference of senior business executives in Washington. He said China must make progress in those areas if it wants its trade privileges renewed next year. In June, China’s favorable trade status was renewed for one year on condition that there be “significant overall progress” on the issues Christopher mentioned.
