The Naval Aviation Depot is attempting to collect more than $100,000 from 27 civilian workers accused of overbilling the government for work at China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center, the Navy announced.

The alleged violations involved employees, attached to the Naval Aviation Depot, putting in for “10 hours of work when they only worked six, or eight hours when they only worked two,” spokesman Mike Hammond said Tuesday.

Depot investigators detected the irregularities through an electronic pass system, he said.

Although based at the North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, the civilians in question help to repair and maintain naval aircraft around the world.

Since the controversy arose, four employees have resigned, Hammond said.
