From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Hundreds of spectators in Columbus chanted and shouted obscenities as 21 Ku Klux Klan members rallied on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse. Police used a chemical spray to stop about 20 demonstrators who tried to push down a chain-link fence separating the klan from the crowd. Six people were arrested and two people were reported injured. “The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is not a hate organization. It is a love organization,” said Vincent Pinette of Cleveland, grand titan of the Realm of Ohio. The rally, which was organized to recruit members, was the second klan gathering of the day in Ohio. About 250 people attended a rally outside the Clinton County Courthouse 60 miles southwest of Columbus.
