Action, Food Kill Rubley’s Hunger

As usual, Ram quarterback T.J. Rubley’s stomach was churning by halftime. But it wasn’t from nerves. It was from hunger.

Following a ritual from his college days at Tulsa, Rubley gulped down a couple of sandwiches at halftime Sunday.

As it turns out, Rubley needed the extra energy, replacing starter Jim Everett in the second half and nearly leading the Rams to a comeback victory.

“It’s just something I’ve analyzed over the years,” Rubley said of his mid-game meal. “Over the course of a football game, if you try to be successful in the fourth quarter, you sometimes go five to seven hours between the pregame meal and the fourth quarter.

“It’s hard to go that long on any day of the week without eating. Halftime is my lunch.”

And the second half was all his.

Entering the game in the third quarter, Rubley completed 12 of 17 passes, including nine in a row, for 151 yards, and touchdowns of four and 21 yards to wide receiver Ernie Jones. He scrambled three times for 24 yards.
