Verdict, Sentencing in Bush Plot Delayed
A court Saturday postponed until Christmas return of a verdict and sentencing of 14 men implicated in an alleged Iraqi plot to kill former President George Bush during a visit to Kuwait.
“This is a big case, and care is needed to reach truth and justice,” said Judge Salah Fahad of the State Security Court.
The three-judge panel hearing the case has to study 1,700 pages of court transcripts before reaching a verdict, he said.
Christmas is not observed in Islamic countries like Kuwait; therefore, Dec. 25 is a working day in the emirate.
After the brief court session, a tired-looking Fahad told reporters, “Our only concern is that no injustice is done to an innocent person.”
Prosecutors charge that most of the defendants were Iraqi intelligence agents sent across the Iraq-Kuwait border with explosives to kill Bush during his visit in April. Iraq has denied the accusation.
