BERLIN : Mix of Anniversaries

Share

Germans mark one of the century’s most checkered days for their country today, which is both the fourth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 55th anniversary of Krystalnacht, the 1938 attack on Jewish properties across Nazi Germany.

In a measure of how far events have moved since the euphoric celebrations of 1989, few plan to officially mark the beginning of the end of Germany’s long division.

Instead, against the backdrop of a worrying resurgence of the extreme right, peace groups have organized commemoration programs in several cities to recall Krystalnacht, one of the events that led to the Holocaust.
