PORT HUENEME : Navy to Remain Key County Contributor

Share

Port Hueneme Chamber of Commerce members were told Wednesday that the Navy’s economic contributions to Ventura County should remain strong despite the service’s entrance into an era of defense cutbacks and downsizing.

Capt. J. Scott Beachy told a crowd of about 80 Wednesday at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme that the Naval Surface Warfare Center, a tenant at the sprawling base, contracted more than $40 million in goods and services from Ventura County businesses. He added that combined military and civilian payrolls at the Port Hueneme and Point Mugu naval facilities exceed $500 million annually.

Beachy, who commands the Warfare Center at the Seabee base, said the Navy remains under constant pressure to do more with less resources.

“Yes, we are always looking for ways to refine our operation,” Beachy said. “So far we have avoided any major cuts, but we don’t know what the future will hold.”

Beachy said the Navy has enjoyed a “working partnership” with the city and its businesses, saying that of the $40 million contracted with county businesses last year, about 25% is with small-business operators.
