Countywide : Help Sought for House Renovation
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and Shelter for the Homeless are seeking volunteers to help renovate a Santa Ana house for once-homeless single men who are getting back on their feet.
Volunteers will help tear off old roofing and install a new roof, reroute electrical wiring and repaint the two-story house at 518 S. Birch St., Habitat for Humanity workers said. Building cleaning and roof removal will take place Saturday and installation of a new roof and painting will be on Nov. 20.
“This is a residence for people who are starting to rebuild their lives,” said Pat Austin, a Habitat for Humanity board member and project manager at BBG Architects in Irvine.
Tenants living in the house were once homeless, but now have jobs, and pay $260 monthly for rent, said Jim Miller of Shelter for the Homeless. Miller’s organization has 15 shelters and low-cost housing units in Orange County, including two in Santa Ana.
The historic home, near Santa Ana High School, houses six to eight people. Tenants will continue living in the house--owned by Shelter for the Homeless--during construction. The tenants will also help fix up the house, Austin said.
Habitat for Humanity built three units for low-income families on Shelton Street near 2nd Street in Santa Ana more than a year ago, Austin said.
