100,000 Attend Funeral of South Korean Monk
The nation’s most revered monk was cremated Wednesday in a funeral that drew more than 100,000 mourners to this remote mountain temple.
“We will not see a man of such great integrity again,” said Pub Woon, a monk at the ancient temple 200 miles southeast of Seoul.
Lee Seong Chul, 82, the spiritual leader of the Chogye order, the country’s largest Buddhist sect, spent most of his life praying in seclusion. He died in a meditation room here last week with his daughter, also a monk, at his side.
Lee’s funeral was one of the largest in modern Korean history.
