Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Dismissal of Gay Marine Is Blocked
A federal judge ordered the Marine Corps to keep a gay sergeant on active duty in another court setback for President Clinton’s new policy restricting gays in the military. U.S. District Judge Stanley Sporkin issued a preliminary injunction barring the discharge or removal of Sgt. Justin Elzie, who declared he was gay Jan. 29, a day after Clinton announced that he opposed the military’s longstanding gay ban. Clinton’s compromise says military personnel can be dismissed for openly acknowledging their homosexuality.
