IBM Considers Selling Unit: International Business Machines Corp. said it might sell IBM Federal Systems Co., the division that puts together computer systems for U.S. government agencies. A sale would help the company raise some of the extra billions needed to pay for restructuring operations and severance to thousands of employees. If a deal is made, it would be IBM’s first sale of a large asset since 1991. However, the company said a decision had not been made to definitely sell the unit, which employs 11,400 people, mostly in the Washington area.
