ANAHEIM : Council Backs Goal to Hire More Police
The City Council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday by Mayor Tom Daly to set as a goal expanding the Police Department by about 50 officers.
Under an emergency order, the council is striving to boost the department from 352 to 400 sworn officers in the next two years. Daly did not say how the additional cost, estimated at $4 million, would be funded. The council directed City Manager James D. Ruth to report back with recommendations on how to pay for the additional officers under the city’s current limited finances.
Earlier Tuesday, the police union, now in salary negotiations with the city, announced that its members have taken a no-confidence vote against Daly.
The union is asking for a 10% pay raise--5% this year and 5% next year--as well as the addition of 100 officers. The association has been working without a contract since July, 1992, and has not had a pay raise since July, 1991.
The city is offering a 6.5% pay raise over two years.
Daly declined comment Tuesday, citing the ongoing negotiations.
Twice last month, 400 police officers and their supporters picketed at council meetings, carrying signs such as “Do You Want Another Miami?”
