Artist Bowls Them Over at APEC Meet

“Through a glass darkly” may describe the diplomatic obscurities of this Pacific trade forum, but the work of one Seattle artist being showcased during the conference is anything but dim.

A set of wildly colorful, glass-blown bowls brightened the stage where President Clinton spoke Friday to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation delegates.

The “macchia” pieces are the work of Dale Chihuly, who also created an orange, three-foot-long glass sculpture for the conference table that Clinton and Asian leaders will use today during talks on Blake Island.

Chihuly’s works also grace the Westin Hotel, where Clinton is staying, and the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel, where other APEC delegates are lodged.

Chihuly, a Northwesterner, is one of the world’s best-known glass artists, with displays in the Louvre and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
