Whittier Area : Local Teacher Appointed to Unexpired Board Term

Share

A local high school teacher will fill the school board seat left vacant by the death of a longtime trustee for the Lowell Joint School District.

Board members selected Gayle K. Rogers from among eight applicants to serve out a four-year term that expires Dec. 2, 1994. Rogers, 44, who teaches in the nearby Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, is scheduled to take office Dec. 13.

She will replace Joyce Canfield, a 20-year board veteran, who died July 6 after a 10-year battle with cancer.

Board President Fred Schambeck praised Rogers as the best of eight “capable and well-qualified candidates.” Board members chose Rogers by secret ballot Monday after interviewing each of the applicants.

The Lowell school district serves elementary and middle-school students in parts of east Whittier, La Habra and La Habra Heights.
