MINING TOWN: The Photographic Record of T.N. Barnard and Nellie Stockbridge From the Coeur d’Alenes by Patricia Hart and Ivar Nelson (University of Washington Press: $19.95; 179 pp.). In 1886, Thomas N. Barnard established a photographic studio in the Coeur d’Alenes region of northern Idaho; his assistant, Nellie Stockbridge, maintained the studio after he retired in 1908. Rich deposits of gold, silver and lead produced a string of boom towns in the Coeur d’Alenes, and the work of Barnard and Stockbridge captures life in these prosperous communities at the turn of the century.
