Sales of Country Club Memberships Reach 500

Sales of home sites at Camarillo’s Spanish Hills Golf & Country Club may not be breaking records, but the club’s developers say they’ve just sold their 500th membership.

That brings the total halfway to the club’s goal, according to John C. Cushman III, chairman of the board of governors. He said initiation fees, ranging from $2,000 to $55,000 depending on privileges, can now be financed.

The facility has been named the state’s best new golf course and clubhouse by California Golf magazine, Cushman said.

A spokesman said construction has begun on the first home in the development, with work on two other houses expected to start in early 1994. In September, the Spanish Hills Development Co. reported that only six of 151 home sites at the project had been sold.

The one-acre-plus lots have been for sale for well over a year. At one time, prices ranged from $395,000 to $1.2 million. Last week, the company said the prices range from $225,000 to $495,000.
