TOPANGA : Homeowners Getting Anti-Erosion Advice

Share

The dirt doctor is going door-to-door.

The U. S. Soil Conservation Service is providing free advice to Topanga and Malibu homeowners on ways to shore up their homes against possible erosion damage that resulted from last month’s fires.

Teams of Conservation Service specialists have mobilized to provide one-on-one visits with nearly 500 homeowners whose properties may need land rehabilitation. Treatment recommendations include straw-mulching, drainage control, seeding, diversion ditches, sandbag barriers and creating fuel breaks in wooded areas.

“We’re doing it to prevent the homeowners from losing the soils on their lands and having them run off into other neighborhoods,” said Rosann Durrah, team leader for the Topanga Conservation Service crew. “We’re doing it to protect lives.”

About 100 homeowners have already received the free consultations, Durrah said. Landowners can request assistance by calling the Calabasas office at (818) 222-4750.
