Prime Minister Robert Malval left for Washington to brief exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide about efforts to end a standoff with the army on restoring democracy to Haiti. “I hope we are still capable of finding a solution,” Malval said in a speech broadcast on radio before he left. Malval, whose Aristide-backed Cabinet is virtually powerless alongside the strong army, has said he will not stay in office past Dec. 15, the date set in August for his resignation as head of a transition government.
