Margaret Thatcher

* Lady Margaret Thatcher’s interview (Opinion, Nov. 28) was a perfect display of the proverbial British pragmatism and egotism, with a touch of nostalgic reminiscence on the past glory of “Proud Albion.” Strong language and unveiled threats used by the so-called “Iron Lady” (who led the war over the remote Falkland Islands) against the Serbian nation are astounding. Oblivious to the existential interests of other nations, a trait inherited from the long succession of the protagonists of the expansionist British policy accustomed to subjugating and annihilating people all over the world, she incites killing of Serbs in Bosnia, Serbia and everywhere--by bombing, of course, while other Serbs of the Islamic faith would do the “messy” part of the ground war. Finally, her labeling of the Serbs as “aggressors,” because they fight for their independence, is a perverse reversal of facts, unless one thinks as a colonialist.

Some people would say that we should not pay attention to the blabbering of an old woman. Unfortunately, it seems to attract the semiliterate followers of racist, fascist and similar ideologies all over the world, and of the so-called “mainstream” media in the United States!

* Although I am not much English-minded, I still recommend: Offer the “Iron Lady” American citizenship now, so the slogan “Margaret Thatcher for President” will be shown in 1996 on placards at every convention.
