Disappointed by a close loss to California last month, Santa Clara was determined not to let another one slip away.

Leading for most of the game, the Broncos didn’t lose their poise when the 13th-ranked Golden Bears outscored them, 15-2, to take a five-point lead with 7:55 to play. They came back to upset Cal, 80-67, Saturday at Oakland, avenging an 81-74 loss in the first round of the Preseason NIT.

“Our guys didn’t fold,” Santa Clara Coach Dick Davey said. “Fortunately, we were able to come back and get a few easy baskets that got us back on track offensively.”

The Broncos (3-1) did much more than that. They held the Bears (2-2) scoreless for 5:48, scoring 14 consecutive points to move ahead, 73-62, on a pair of free throws by John Woolery with 56 seconds to play.

“We kept our focus better this time,” Woolery said. “We knew they were going to make the run. But when it got close, we thought we could win it.”

Santa Clara, which got 17 points each from Pete Eisenrich and Steve Nash, tied a school record by making 13 three-point shots.

Cal got 28 points from Lamond Murray and 14 from Jason Kidd, but made only 40% of its shots.

Washington State 76, Alabama 70--Mark Hendrickson scored 18 points at Spokane, Wash., to help the Cougars remain unbeaten.

Alabama (0-2) led at the half, 33-31, but Washington State (5-0) came back with a 17-3 scoring run to begin the second half.

Alabama’s Marvin Orange led all scorers with 23 points.

Oklahoma 93, Oregon State 87--Jeff Webster scored 35 points to lead the Sooners at Corvallis, Ore.

Webster tied the score at 87-87 with a driving layup with 1:10 to play. Teammate Ryan Minor hit a short jumper with 29 seconds left to give the Sooners the lead.

Brent Barry led Oregon State (0-1) with 21 points, and teammate Kareem Anderson scored 20.

Oregon State made 52% of its shots, but only 18 of 43 free throws. Oklahoma made 57% of its shots and 69% of its free throws.

Pacific 75, Oregon 69--Michael Jackson scored 32 points at Eugene, Ore., to help the Tigers to their first road victory over a Pacific 10 Conference team since Dec. 10, 1954, when they beat Cal.

Jackson, who scored 21 points in the first half, made three three-point shots early in the game as the Tigers (3-2) grabbed an 18-14 lead. He added 10 points in the final three minutes of the half to give Pacific a 45-34 halftime lead.
