James Winters scored 23 points and Kenyon Murray had 20 to lead Iowa to a 101-79 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday in the championship game of the Hawkeye Invitational.

Iowa (3-0) won the tournament for the 11th time in its 12-year history as Jim Bartels scored 13 and Jess Settles 11. Long Beach State (3-1) was led by Mike Atkinson with 14 points. Terrance O’Kelley had 13, Tim Caviezel 12 and James Cotton 11.

The Hawkeyes forced 17 turnovers in the first half, many of them on inbounds passes, and made six of eight three-point shots as they built a 57-42 lead at intermission.

The lead might have been more but the Hawkeyes made only 15 of 29 free throws in the first 20 minutes. They were 22 for 32 in the second half, however.

The 49ers never got closer than 13 points in the second half. Jeff Rogers’ first basket of the second half cut Iowa’s lead to 57-44, but Iowa reeled off nine of the next 11 points for a 66-46 lead with 14:58 to play.
