Hitler and Guns

Share

* A pro-gun lobby letter (Nov. 30) ends with “I still recall Germany being a democratic society right before Hitler disarmed citizens.” A stop has to be put to this nonsense. Germany always had strict gun control laws, and Hitler had nothing to “disarm.” Hitler came to power legally. On Jan. 30, 1933, President Hindenburg appointed Hitler as reich chancellor. One month later the Reichtag arson gave Hitler the pretext to suspend basic rights from the constitution. With these “emergency powers” Hitler put political opponents in jail and started the concentration camps.

Does anyone really believe that a home-owned gun would have saved a liberal, a communist, a Jew, a Gypsy, a “sexually deviant,” or a just plain decent German from the Hitler’s “lethal” powers?
