Stich Reaches Semifinals of Grand Slam Cup

Defending champion Michael Stich came from behind and beat Brett Steven on Thursday, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, advancing to the semifinals of the Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany.

Stich, No. 2 in the world, now has won $431,250 in tennis’ richest tournament that invites 16 players with the best records in the year’s four Grand Slam tournaments.

By reaching the quarterfinals, Steven earned $262,500 and nearly doubled his 1993 earnings. His total career earnings had been $438,497, including $102,140 in 1992.

In other quarterfinal action, Stefan Edberg defeated Wayne Ferreira, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-0.

Basketball

University of California forward Alfred Grigsby, who missed the Golden Bears’ first two games with a knee injury, will be out at least two weeks with a strained left hamstring.
