INTERIORS : Floored by Carpet Choices? Consider Fibers

Share
From Associated Press

Don’t judge a carpet by its color alone. Picking the perfect plush means finding one that will always looks as good as the day it was installed.

Fibers

Nylon is a versatile fiber used in the majority of residential carpets. It is strong, but can only hold up to oil-base stains and mildew if it’s treated with a soil- or stain-resistant finish. It also can generate static electricity, so it’s wise to check for an antistatic finish.

Polypropylene is a superior fiber in terms of stain resistance, cleanability, color retention and static control. It isn’t as crush-proof as nylon, however, so traffic patterns appear sooner.

Polyester is soft and wool is luxurious, but neither is as durable as nylon or polypropylene, so use them in low-traffic areas.

Characteristics

The best quality carpets have dense piles and tightly twisted, resilient yarns that are heat-set.

Polypropylene is inherently stain resistant; other fibers are chemically treated. The best stain fighters are “cooked into” the fibers; others are sprayed on.

The best warranties are those that protect against crushing, matting and stains. Makers guarantee carpet for as long as they believe it will last, so the longer the warranty, the better.

It’s usually worth it to buy the highest quality carpet you can afford. Considering the cost of padding and installation, a carpet that must be replaced in five years is no bargain.
