NEWSWIRE : Waldrop Wins Outland Trophy

Nose guard Rob Waldrop of Arizona, quarterback Charlie Ward of Florida State and cornerback Antonio Langham of Alabama were honored during the College Football Awards show at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on Friday.

Waldrop won the Outland Trophy as the outstanding interior lineman, Ward the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback, and Langham the Jim Thorpe Award as the outstanding defensive back.

Langham was declared ineligible for the Crimson Tide’s last two games after it was revealed that he had signed with an agent after the 1993 Sugar Bowl.

Tennis

Pete Sampras, who usually has trouble beating Michael Chang, mastered Chang’s new power game during a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the $6-million Grand Slam Cup at Munich, Germany.

In the last quarterfinal match, Petr Korda upset French Open champion Sergi Bruguera, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

In today’s semifinals, Michael Stich will play Stefan Edberg and Sampras will play Korda.

Golf

South African Simon Hobday shot a bogey-free 64, eight under par, and took a two-shot lead in the first round of the season-ending Senior Tour Championship at Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico.

Dave Stockton, who leads the seniors with five victories and $1,115,944 in earnings, scrambled to a 66 and was tied for second with Larry Gilbert and Bob Murphy.

Baseball

First baseman Rafael Palmeiro and the Baltimore Orioles have reached agreement on a contract worth about $27.5 million over five years, WMAR-TV in Baltimore reported.

Eric Anthony, who never became the power hitter the Houston Astros hoped he would be, was traded to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Mike Hampton and outfielder Mike Felder.

The Chicago Cubs traded left-handed reliever Chuck McElroy to the Cincinnati Reds for pitchers Larry Luebbers and Mike Anderson, and catcher Darron Cox.

Outfielder Roberto Kelly of the Reds underwent arthroscopic surgery for a shoulder injury. He is expected to be recovered by the start of the season.
