Tighter Rein on Imported Auto Parts: In an effort to protect its domestic car industry, China plans to tighten up controls over foreign automobile companies importing components for local assembly, the official China Daily reported. Future car projects are likely to have trouble getting the nod from central authorities, the paper said. China says that the importation of knockdown car kits, which just need to be put together by Chinese workers, have slowed the nation’s ability to produce its own components. Beijing has tried to force joint venture auto plants to work toward using more local parts, but the components haven’t met quality standards so the plea has largely fallen on deaf ears.
