A hazardous-waste incinerator criticized by environmentalists resumed burning during the weekend after repairs to equipment that released a small amount of combustion gas.

The Waste Technologies Industries incinerator shut itself down after a scrubber system’s pump valve malfunctioned Friday. It then was put back in operation using a backup system, the company said.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency ordered the incinerator shut down again until the faulty unit was repaired.

The agency gave permission Saturday night for operations to resume, spokeswoman Pat Madigan said.

Opponents of the plant have complained that it is too close to a school, residential areas and the Ohio River.
