Limestone blocks as big as houses crashed off a mountainside into a poor section of Cairo on Tuesday, killing at least 25 people.

Cairo Mayor Omar Abdel-Akher said that another 30 people were believed trapped under the huge rocks. Rescue officials said it could take more than two days before all bodies are recovered.

Dozens were trapped under debris after a 200-yard swath of rock weighing about 3,000 pounds broke free before dawn.

Rescue workers were hampered by mud, and bulldozers sent to clear debris could not get into some narrow streets of the area.

Brig. Osama Mohammed Mansour, head of area police, said 21 people were rescued.

It was not clear what caused the collapse.
