From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The man accused of killing six people and wounding 17 during a rampage on a commuter train in Long Island asked for a new attorney and accused his jailers of abusing him. Colin A. Ferguson told a judge in Mineola, N.Y., he wanted his court-appointed attorney replaced by lawyer Colin Moore. Moore defended one of the young men convicted of attacking a Central Park jogger who was raped, beaten and left for dead in 1989. Nassau County Judge Ira Warshawsky said he will not replace Ferguson’s lawyer until Ferguson undergoes a psychiatric examination to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
