Low-Price Chips to Be Marketed: Hewlett-Packard Co., the No. 2 U.S. computer maker, is planning a new series of powerful chips costing as little as $25, or one-tenth the price of the best-selling microprocessor, for use in desktop workstations and peripherals for shipment next year. The five new members of Hewlett-Packard’s PA-RISC chip family are scheduled to be announced today. Their low prices are expected to stimulate use of the chips in other products such as fax machines and printers from partners that include Oki Electric Industry Co. and Hitachi Ltd. Hewlett-Packard intends to use two of the chips, the PA-7100 LC and the PA-7150, in new versions of its HP 9000 workstations and servers next year.
