From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A national mail fund-raising drive linked to the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program is being investigated because no toys were bought with the nearly $10 million collected. The preliminary inquiry, prompted by a story in the Sunday Record of Hackensack (N.J.), focuses on nationwide solicitations the Toys for Tots Foundation made since July, 1992, not on the annual toy drive for needy children, Robert De Muro of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said. William J. Grein, foundation vice president for operations, said contributions have been nearly depleted by costs.
