Eight-Lane Tracks and Regulations

Share

As a registered U.S.A. Track official and a former 1984 Olympic Organizing Committee member, I’d like to give my opinion on one of your written statements in regards to the Ramsaur Stadium’s running track (Times, Dec. 12).

According to our rules and regulations, any records made and properly recorded on a standard eight-lane track under the proper conditions could be credited as a conference, league and/or meet record. Olympic games have been held on eight-lane tracks. Nine-lane tracks are commonly called “oversized” tracks.

In the past, the seven-lane oval track that was the home of the original Compton Invitational Track meet wasn’t eligible for Conference, C.I.F. Southern Sectional meet finals because it was one lane short of the required eight lanes. The Compton Invitational Track Club Ltd. committee looks forward to hosting the Compton Cup Invitational Track meet again next year and witness new meet records.
