San Fernando Valley residents heading to the Rose Bowl game or Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day can avoid traffic and parking hassles by catching the special bus and shuttle lines offered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

According to MTA spokesman Steve Chesser, special rides to the Rose Parade will begin early Saturday morning. More than 12,000 people rode the lines last year to avoid costly and scarce parking for both the game and parade, he said.

East Valley residents can board Line 420 from 4:01 a.m. to 6:31 a.m. as it departs from Tobias Avenue and Parthenia Street. Stops on this route include Van Nuys and Victory boulevards, Burbank Boulevard and Woodman Avenue, Lankershim and Chandler boulevards, and Riverside Drive at Lankershim before arriving at Holly Street and Raymond Avenue near the parade route in Pasadena.

Return service after the parade begins at 11 a.m. for both Line 420 and 424 at Holly and Raymond. The latest departure is 11:35 a.m. for Line 424 and 11:40 a.m. for Line 420.

The fare is $3 each way for both lines, with no discount fares or monthly passes accepted.

Later in the morning, Line 420 also will serve as a special route for football fans headed to the Rose Bowl game. Departures will begin at 10 a.m. from Tobias Avenue and Parthenia Street, with service from that spot every 15 minutes thereafter until 11:15 a.m. The line will make the same stops as for the Rose Parade in Panorama City, Van Nuys and North Hollywood.

Return service runs for about two hours following the game. The fare is $3.50 each way, with no discount fares or monthly passes.
