Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Defendant in Bomb Plot Denied Bail
A federal judge denied bail to Ibrahim Elgabrowny, a key defendant in the alleged conspiracy to blow up New York City landmarks. U.S. District Judge Michael Mukasey also disclosed that prosecutors have evidence that Elgabrowny tried to free his cousin El Sayyid A. Nosair from prison. Nosair was being held at the time at a New York state prison on weapons charges. Mukasey said the government had monitored conversations of the two men discussing the construction and deployment of bombs, which “suggests strongly that he was involved in a plot to free Nosair from prison by force.”
