Car Sales Mirror French Economic Slide: The French automobile market in 1993 dipped to its lowest level since 1975 as France’s economy continued to decline. The French auto maker’s council said registrations of new cars in 1993 were down 18.3% to 1.7 million cars, from 2.1 million in 1992. The registration statistics, essentially a measure of new car sales, reflect a continued economic slowdown, with high interest rates for credit and widespread fear of job loss making consumers reluctant to make expensive purchases.
