Saturn Earns First Profit: General Motors Corp. said that after running in the red for 2 1/2 years, its Saturn division posted a “substantial” operating profit in 1993 and expects to earn even more in 1994. “Saturn will exceed its break-even goal for 1993 and will make a sizable operating profit,” said Thomas Mannoff, Saturn’s vice president for finance. Mannoff said Saturn made its first profit in May, 1993, and was profitable every month since, except for July. Separately, GM Executive Vice President William Hoglund said the auto maker expects to make a decision in about two months about expanding Saturn’s production to a second assembly plant.
