Stay Out of Bosnia, U.S. Warns Croatia
The U.S. envoy to the United Nations said Wednesday that Croatia could face economic sanctions if it fails to heed warnings about staying out of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Asked at a news conference about the U.S. view of Croatian support for ethnic kin in the Bosnian conflict, Madeleine Albright said, “I can tell you this is a subject that comes up frequently and that might in fact lead to sanctions if there is not some change on this issue.”
She added: “We are very concerned about those activities. We have in any number of ways warned the Croatian government and the military specifically on this subject.”
The highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit Croatia, Albright said she will raise the issue of Croatia’s role in the war with President Franjo Tudjman.
U.N. and military observers have confirmed that Croatia has helped arm Bosnian Croat forces, but the government has denied direct involvement in the war.
