LOS ANGELES : Olympic Surplus Grants Go to 22 Youth Groups

The foundation charged with handing out the Southern California youth share of the 1984 Olympic surplus has awarded another $1,049,956 in grants to 22 youth sports organizations, bringing to more than $60 million its Southland investments since the Los Angeles Games.

The largest new grant, $550,000, went to Kids in Sports Inc. for running 10 sports clubs in south and east Los Angeles.

Other grants included $125,000 to the Southern California Tennis Assn.’s National Junior Tennis League; $88,629 to velodromes in Encino, San Diego and Carson; $72,000 to the Mt. San Antonio College Youth Days Program in Walnut; $45,874 to the Hollywood-Wilshire YMCA, $43,056 to the Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City and $40,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of the Coachella Valley.

The original Olympic surplus amounted to $222.7 million, but the 40% Southern California youth share has been drawing interest and has grown above the 1984 totals.
