THOUSAND OAKS : City to Discuss Use of Recyclable Goods
At the urging of Councilwoman Jaime Zukowski, the Thousand Oaks City Council will consider requiring the use of recyclable material at all city-sponsored events, even if those paper plates or plastic cups are more expensive.
Holding up a plastic cup that is accepted in the city’s curbside recycling program, Zukowski urged city staff to look carefully at each product purchased for city events such as Conejo Valley Days or the Civic Arts Plaza grand opening.
“It still costs more to divert material from the landfill (for recycling) than it does to fill up the landfill,” Zukowski said. “Obviously, something is wrong with the equation. We must encourage markets for the (recyclable) material we are diverting from landfills.”
Buying recycled--or recyclable--goods for city events makes sense, Councilman Alex Fiore agreed, even if the environment-friendly product costs slightly more.
The council voted unanimously to ask staff for a report on how the city can boost the market for recycled goods.
