SAN FERNANDO : 3rd Teen-Ager Faces Trial in Slaying

Share

A Simi Valley teen-ager was ordered Thursday to stand trial as an adult for the killing of an assistant manager of a Porter Ranch pizzeria in a robbery last year.

San Fernando Valley Juvenile Court Judge Morton Rochman said Dusty Tyrone Castillo, 17, who is also charged with 11 other armed robberies, was unfit to be tried as a juvenile because of the sophisticated and cold-blooded nature of the crimes.

Castillo--who is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in San Fernando Superior Court on 26 counts including murder, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon--is the third teen-ager to be ordered tried as an adult for the Jan. 14, 1993, robbery-slaying of 19-year-old John Michael Holden.

Currently, the other defendants, Alex Martinez Velasquez, 18, and Oscar Hernandez Villanueva, 17, are being tried together. However, Judge Candace Beason is expected to decide on a defense motion next week to try the cases separately and to set a trial date.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Larry Mason said Castillo will probably be tried separately. All face maximum sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Had they been tried and convicted in Juvenile Court, under state law they could not have been incarcerated beyond their 25th birthdays.

According to police, Castillo and Velasquez entered Ameci In & Out Pizza & Pasta restaurant in Porter Ranch while Villanueva waited in a getaway car. Detective Paul S. Tippin said the two demanded money. Holden handed over $450, but Castillo shot him once in the chest anyway. Holden died later in the hospital.

Velasquez and Villanueva were arrested soon after the incident, but Castillo had eluded authorities for nearly 10 months. Police had released the name and a photograph of Castillo in April, and in October a television series that re-enacts unsolved crimes aired a story on the slaying. Castillo was arrested a week later in San Luis Obispo County.

Castillo is accused of committing 12 armed robberies between Dec. 3, 1992, and Jan. 19, 1993, including the Holden robbery-slaying. In the 11 other incidents, police said, Castillo fired a shot before demanding money, but no one was injured.
