A top Fire Department administrator has been named fire chief of a Northern California city.

Division Chief Steve Magliocco, who runs the department’s business affairs, will become Vallejo’s fire chief next month. Vallejo, on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, has about 120,000 residents.

Magliocco, 44, is a 20-year member of the department, having begun as a firefighter. He was one of the city’s first paramedics in 1976. He was promoted to captain in 1982 and battalion chief in 1984.

A 33-year resident of the city, he is a graduate of Servite High School and UC Irvine. He is married and has four children.

Magliocco credited Anaheim Chief Jeff Bowman for getting him ready for his new job.

“Chief Bowman rotates us through the key staff positions, giving us kind of a taste of what it’s like to do his job,” Magliocco said. “Unfortunately, Chief Bowman is younger than I am, and I like him too much to run him over with my car. So if I want to be a chief, it means I have to go elsewhere.”

Bowman said: “Steve’s considerable experience and knowledge will be a loss for the city and its residents, but I am sure he will continue to make many positive contributions to fire services as chief in Vallejo.”

No replacement for Magliocco has been named.
