OJAI : Recycling Plan Gives Reduced Trash Fee
Customers taking advantage of an improved recycling program in Ojai will pay less for trash pickup service, under a new franchise agreement between the city of Ojai and E.J. Harrison and Sons.
The seven-year plan, which stipulates that 5% of gross revenues be given to the city, upgrades the company’s commitment to recycling, particularly among commercial businesses.
“Our experience with (E.J. Harrison) in the past has been very positive,” Councilwoman Nina V. Shelley said. “There’s a mutual interest because this city is small enough for them to try out something new and make us a model from which to work for the future.”
Customers recycling more materials, resulting in fewer solid wastes, would fall into a lower monthly service category. But the agreement also proposes rate increases of between 4% and 12% for residential and commercial service.
Under the plan, minimum residential service would increase from $17.59 to $19.09 a month; basic service would rise from $20.81 to $21.65 monthly; and high-volume service would increase from $31.71 to $35.75 every month. Commercial fees also would be raised between $5 and $17 a month, if the new rates are approved.
E.J. Harrison officials have not asked for a rate increase in Ojai since August, 1991.
The agreement is scheduled to become effective Feb. 1.
